Invincible students from Temasek Engineering School comfortably retained their crown in the annual Odyssey of the Mind (Singapore) national competition held on 16 April 2005 at ACS (Indep).
The Temasek ENG School team topped three of the four areas in the competition, emerging Best in the Balsa Structure Performance, in Balsa Structure Design and in Style (i.e. Skit, Props & Costumes).
The team’s overall score was 309.93/350, thrasing the 1st Runner-Up team by whopping 96.11 points. They also beat, among others, such prominent schools as St. Andrew’s JC, Raffles Girls, Nanyang Girls High & Hwa Chong Institute.
The team’s structure weighed 14.2g and held a total of 170.9kg in the competition. They had to perform an eight-minute skit in the theme of “Crazy Columns”, and their performance focused on the philosophy of “what goes around comes around” and hinged on the unpredictability of life demonstrated through a tsunami attack.
Temasek Engineering School has been undefeated since it first started taking part in the Odyssey of the Mind (Div 3) competition 7 years ago.
The team will now represent Singapore in the OM World Finals to be held at the University of Colorado in Boulder, USA, from 20-25 May 2005.

For the 5th year running, Temasek Polytechnic emerged champions at the Odyssey of the Mind (Singapore) national competition. The team, represented by 5 Temasek Engineering students, emerged top in both the Spontaneous and the Long Term rounds, beating 13 other teams from tertiary institutions, junior colleges, and secondary schools in Singapore.
In the Spontaneous round, the participants had to respond to a verbal problem within three minutes in random order in front of a panel of five judges. Their creative answers earned them a perfect score of 100 points.(Three points were awarded to a creative response while one point was awarded to a normal response.)
In the Long Term round, the team chose a balsa structural problem called "Odd Pod Structure" in which they were required to construct an oddly-shaped structure based on given dimensions, weighing no more than 18g, and that would be able to hold as much weight as possible. Supported by just small 0.5" pods of their chosen materials, the team's structure stood up to a total of 155.5kg (342.1lb), unequalled by any other team in the competition, earning them the maximum of 150 points. Their innovative 9-pillar design also earned them the maximum of 50 (out of 50) points.
In addition, they had to perform an 8-minute skit based on their chosen theme, a mixed "pot" of Romeo & Juliet and Liang Shanbo & Zhu Yingtai, entitled "A Tale of Two Butterflies". They impressed the judges with their props -- an interplay between East & West -- a self-composed poem, and a dance, earning, once again, the maximum of 50 points.
The 5 Temasek Engineering students also represented Singapore (Div 3 & 4) at the OM World Finals which will be held at the Iowa State University, USA, from 28-31 May 03, competing at the collegiate level.

About the team...
Representing the best of Temasek Engineering School, the 5 team members are first year Engineering students from the various Diploma groups. Showing great teamwork, they pooled their creativity and resources, and applied the skills and knowledge which they have received in their respective disciplines. The team is coached by Creative Problem Solving expert and OM veteran, Mr Roland Yeo.

For the second time in 3 years, Temasek Engineering School emerged 1st Runner-up in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals, a annual problem-solving contest in which participants have to design and construct a structure within strict technical specifications, and to use it in a skit to portray a real-life theme. This year, the theme was "It's a Snap!".
As in previous years, the team had to build a structure of balsa wood that weighs no more than 15g and supports as much weight as possible. The catch this year is that the structure is had ot be composed of 5 parts that the team will assemble during the 8-min performance. They have to demonstrate that the parts interlock on their own by lifting the completed structure from any piece of wood. The structure built by the team from Temasek Engineering School weighed 14.7g and managed to withhold a total weight of 190lbs. The team was also given a bonus of 40 (out of 50) points for their unique interlocking design, making them one of the best designs in this competition.
For the skit, the team picked the 5 senses as their theme and demonstated how life was like without any of the senses through comedy, song and dance. The props were outstanding and the acting was impactful, impressing the judges and -- judging from the standing ovation at the end of the skit -- the audience too!
The OM Finals was held at the University of Colorado, USA, from 21--26 May 2002. This year's OM competition saw a total of 700 teams from 18 countries taking part.

The 3 Engineering students were among the team of 7 students which represented Temasek Polytechnic and emerged champions at the OM (Singapore), a creative problem-solving-style competition. In the "Spontaneous" round held at Anglo Chinese School (Ind) on 26 April 2001, participants were put through an oral quiz. In the "Long-term" round held at the Singapore American School on 28 April 2001, teams were required to construct a wooden structure with given specifications that could withstand the heaviest weight piled onto it. The weights were gradually added onto the structure as part of a skit which participants were required to perform.
The team from Temasek Polytechnic beat every other team in both rounds and earned the right to represent Singapore at the OM World Finals held on 4 June 2001 at the University of Maryland, College Park, USA, where they emerged 4th.

The students did the Temasek Engineering School proud by emerging second in the OM World Finals held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, USA, from 30 May -- 4 June 2000. This was after they had topped the OM (Singapore) competition a month earlier.
Competitors had to perform a skit to portray the theme, "Shrinking Strucutre". TP emerged 2nd in this category. In the the spontaneous verbal response contest, during which they had to come up with as many creative solutions to a given problem as possible, TP emerged top, giving them an overall 2nd position.
