Temasek Engineering School
"Where the Future Happens!"

More than 4,000 Temasek Engineering students and staff turned up for the School's biggest ever event -- the Sentosa Bash held on 7 July 2001 (Saturday) to mark the launching of the Temasek Engineering School's new symbol and tagline, "Where the Future Happens". It was also a celebration of the School's "10 Great Years of Engineering".

As Deputy Principal, Mr Ang Keng Loo, flagged-off the 2km-long contingent, students charged forward and lined the entire walkway of the Sentosa causeway. Leading the pack was Engineering Director, Mrs Lay-Tan Siok Lie, together with Deputy Directors and Course Managers. They were followed by flag-bearers of the 10 diploma groups.

On reaching the island of Sentosa, students, led by their Care Persons, scrambled immediately to their first check-point in the Treasure Hunt game. Some ran, determined to have a go at the top prize, while others decided to forgo the prize for a leisurely stroll. Care Persons were spotted panting and staggering along as they tried to catch up with their more agile and energetic students.

Three check-points later, all staff and students were gathered at Siloso Beach, feasting on apple pies and buns... under the sorching sun. The heat was forgotten as everyone partied at the School's first and biggest ever family picnic.

With a POP! and a BANG!... the Temasek Engineeing School's new symbol and tagline was launched. Engineering Director Mrs Lay-Tan Siok Lie, together with Deputy Directors Mr Yong Fook Joo, Mr Cheah Swee Hock, and Mr Raymond Teo Choo Hwee, pushed a button on a remote-control, activating party-poppers and colourful fluttering confetti from giant balloons to mark the launching.
Some 20 students then performed the Engineering Rap and Cheer, pumping a sense of identity into the adrenalin-charged veins of staff and students, thickening the euphoria of the event, and drawing rounds of applause.

Then the fun began -- TP-style "Survivor" contest featuring obstacle courses and water games, as well as carnival booths kept staff and students busy cheering in the sun. Ten teams each representing one diploma took part in the games. The team from the Diploma in Intelligent Building Technology crawled, brawled and scrawled their way to victory. Second place went the Diploma in Mechatronics, while the Computer Engineering group took 3rd spot.

Temasek Engineering staff and students then set a Guinness World record for preparing the longest poh-piah -- 100 metres long! About 400 pairs of hands rolled the poh-piah, accomplishing the task in unison. Hungry souls then feasted on the poh-piah. Seasoned with the most natural pepper (the dusty beach sand), it tasted just fantastic.

About 30 old folks from the Lions Befrienders were also invited to the bash. Chaperoned by Temasek Engineering students, the olddies also had a go at rolling the poh-piah. They were also brought on a tour of the Merlion and Underwater World after the celebration. As everyone found out at the end of the day, age is no barrier to companionship, fun and enjoyment.

In the meantime, beach games continued well into the afternoon, and, as the setting sun hit the sands of Siloso Beach, reflected in the waters of the glistening sea were images of a memorable day for the Temasek Engineering School, a day... "Where the Future Happens".
