TechX Challenge

TechX Challenge is a robotic competition in which participating teams program their robots
to autonomously navigate through various obstacles within one hour.
Organised by the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), the competition aims to inspire and engage
the wider community of engineers and technologists in applying science & technology for defence and national security.

A team of 9 lecturers and robotic experts from Temasek Engineering School emerged 1st runner-up in the inaugural TechX Challenge robotic competition.

After a gruelling preliminary round held in July 2008, six robots from the six finalist teams squared off against one another at the grand finals held on 21 Sep 2008. In the finals, each of the 6 finalist robots was required to navigate from an outdoor urban location to an indoor environment, overcoming obstacles such as stairs, performing search tasks, and even taking an elevator along the way – all without human intervention!

Although none of the robots managed to complete all the assigned tasks within the stipulated one hour, TP’s robot emerged second in terms of the number of tasks accomplished.

TP’s team manager, Mr Loh Yue Thong, said: “Over the past one year, our team worked long and hard, often into the wee hours of the morning, preparing for this competition. We have not only sharpened our technical competency, but also strengthened the friendship and camaraderie among our team members. It was an intense learning experience.”
