Launched in May 1986, the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award is an annual event jointly organised by the Tan Kah Kee Foundation and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), with support from the Singapore Science Centre. It aims to stimulate creativity and to promote scientific and technological research among young Singaporeans.

Record performance by Engineering students
Temasek Engineering School registered one of its best performance in the annual Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor's Award compeititon in 2007, winning a total of 8 awards. The Engineering students won 2 Silver, 2 Merit, 2 Commendation and 2 Encouragement awards.
The "Bladeless Fan", which won a Silver medal, is safer than conventional fans with blades and yet produce equal amount of wind. It can be safely installed in all HDB apartments.
The other Silver medal came from the "Fail-Safe Human Fall Detector", which is a special system for the elderly, that is able to automatically send an SMS alert to the elderly person's next of kin, in the event of a fall.
The students received their awards at a presentation ceremony held at the Singapore Science Centre on 26 May 2007.

Engineering Students Win 5 Awards
Temasek Engineering students snatched 1 Merit + 4 Commendation awards at the annual Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Awards competition 2006.
Graduating students Joshua ong and Jessica Tran Ngoc Trang took the judges breath away with their ingenious invention, the "Emergency Air Supply", which could help to save lives if a fire breaks out in the home and the entire house is filled with smoke.
The simple device comprises a breathing mask, attached to a breathing tube which is inserted into the toilet bowl (yes, toilet bowl!), enabling the user to obtain fresh air through the sewage pipe. (see diagram below). Well, perhaps it's not exactly your idea of fresh air, but it may save your life, never mind the strange aroma that you might get together with your oxygen!
Four other projects won Commendation Awards.

Our Two Heroes
Amid more stringent criteria, Temasek Engineering School still slipped in two Commendation Awards at the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors' Award 2004.
The "Foldable Mine Crawler", designed by Ng Chong Woon, impressed judges as it was an improvement of existing mine crawlers used by SAF Combat Engineers to ignite landmines and clear a mindfield. Working along the same principles, the Chong Woon's Mine Crawler is foldable, and can be stored inside a soldier's Skeleton Battle Order (SBO), making it exceptionally versatile and portable.
The "Modified Breadboard", the brain-child of Ang Tze Hao, is a simple but highly innovative adapation of existing breadboards used by Engineering students studying circuits. The pin holes on a particular horizontal or vertical strip are inked by metal pieces beneath, and coloured according to the circuits they represent. This reduces the chances of students plugging a circuit into a wrong hole.
The students received their awards at a presentation ceremony at the Singapore Science Centre on 3 April 2004.
